June 8 - Nebraska City, NE to White Cloud, KS (77 mi.)

I left my Warm Showers host, Bruce Berggren's house about 7:30 AM this morning and headed south through town on US73. I stopped for a quick breakfast at McDs. Bruce and I drove to the Steamboat Trace trailhead last night to see what the conditions were. With the rain in the area lately and given some comments by prior Lewis & Clark route riders, I decided against riding the Trace. Bruce had informed me that US75&73 had a wide paved shoulder all the way to Falls City, NE my destination for tonight. Bruce was right and the ride was fine. I stopped for refreshments at a Casey's in Auburn NE at 20 miles and made it to Falls City by 1:30 PM. I Had planned to spend the night at the city park which had showers. Once in Falls City I ate lunch at Dickey' BBQ and while eating checked the weather for tomorrow. It is supposed to start with showers around 6 AM then turn to rain for the rest of the day. The ACA map showed that White Cloud (20 miles away) allows camping in the city park. I rode on thinking once at White Cloud I could see if I thought I could make another 35 mile to Atchison where I could get a motel for one or 2 nights while the rain passed. By White Cloud I'd covered 77 miles and decided to stop and camp. So tomorrow's ride if there is rain will only be about 35-40 miles instead of 55-60. It is all along KS7 which so far has has virtually no traffic. I'm set up under a small pavilion and cleaned up pretty well in the restroom sink. There is electricity so I'm charging my phone and tail light. The day was very overcast and since most of my cycling (all but the last 11 miles) was on US highways, I had my tail light on all day. There is a cool breeze and the skies have cleared somewhat. It' nicer now than it has been all day - GO FIGURE!! If it does in fact rain tomorrow as forecast, I plan to get a motel room.
