Nice ride today. Up at 6:30 AM trying to be quiet and not disturb the Ahrens family. They are the ones from Carbondale, CO cycling with their two young daughters. I finally got everyone's name (hopefully); Eric, Heidi, Coralee and Ramona. Heidi got up to help me get my bike out.
It was considerably more humid than it has been previously and it reached at least the upper 80's if not the low 90's. It was still pleasant enough while moving on the bike.
Not many photos today. The scenery continued to be spectacular; riding next to the river in many places and under the high limestone bluffs. Much of the trail continued to be under tree cover which helped a lot with the temperature. Photos just don't do justice to the experience.
I had been told a few days ago of the large group of riders heading towards me. The Katy Trail Ride started in St. Charles this morning, 350 strong, headed for their first overnight stay in Hermann. I started seeing them as I left McKittrick right after lunch about noon. This is only a few miles from Hermann so these were the fast group. I continued to see them all the way to Marthasville at 2:00 PM so they were pretty spread out. I'm guessing that some of last ones are not going to make it to Hermann under their own power as they were looking very weary from the exertion under hot and humid conditions.
I stopped at the Katy Caboose as I arrived in Marthasville and had ice cream and a soda. Many of the bars in towns along the way are closed on Monday. Really, other than the market/deli in McKittrick, not much was open today where a person could get food and cold beverage. There were two groups at the Katy Caboose. One was several middle aged couples riding several days on the trail and staying at B&Bs. The other was a man and his son who started in Clinton and will finish in St. Charles late this afternoon. The dad was Ted Riser. They are from northern Louisiana and have toured a fair amount including the Natchez Trace which was a big portion of this summer's plan A for me. Ted indicated that they may ride the trace again this fall. I told him to let me know and I would see if I could join them. Great discussion with the Riser men.
I'm parked under the pavilion at the park. The restrooms were open so I took a shower. There is a bar nearby that is said to serve very good pizza (according to the postmaster) so I'll head there shortly for dinner and probably hit the Katy Caboose again for ice cream.
