I'm now on Plan B of my 2014 summer bike trip. Plan A was aborted in Baton Rouge a week and a half ago due to a major storm system moving through the area.
Plan A was to have ridden north from Baton Rouge on Adventure Cycling Associations (ACA) Great Rivers South route to just north of Cairo, IL. through LA, MS, AL, TN, KY and IL. This would have included the Natchez Trace National Parkway. North of Cairo, the route would have taken me up the Mississippi River Trail (MRT) through IL, WI and MN to the headwaters in Lake Itasca State Park. Anyway - maybe another year.
Plan B has me riding Section 1 of the ACA Lewis & Clark route from Council Bluffs, IA to St. Charles, MO then riding the MRT trail to the Mississippi River headwaters. I plan to leave Council Bluffs by mid-morning tomorrow. The weather tonight and tomorrow morning is not supposed to be very good but I'm hoping that by 10 or 11 AM tomorrow morning most of the storm system will have passed this area. Tomorrow night's stopover is at a Warm Showers host in Nebraska City, NE which is only about a 50 mile ride.
I've scaled back what I am taking on this tour and will only have my smart phone for blog updates. We'll see how that works. I'll at least take notes and post after the trip. I don't have a very easy way to get photos from my camera to my cell phone so that photos can be included in any updates along the way so the daily entries may be brief and updated layer.
